The Body Knows Before the Mind Has Language

Long before I could explain what I was witnessing, my great grandmother put clay jars in my hands. She worked with sound in a language most of the women who came to her did not understand. And still — trauma left. This is what I inherited.

✦ ✦ ✦

The first time I understood what Yoga Nidra actually was, I was five years old and I did not know the word for it yet.

I was standing next to my great grandmother in a small room in the Atlas Mountains, holding a clay jar filled with dried herbs I could not name, watching a woman I had never seen before lie on the floor while my great grandmother sang over her body in Berber. The woman spoke Arabic. She did not understand a word of what was being said. And still — I watched her chest rise and fall. I watched her hands unclench. I watched something leave her body that had been locked in there for years.

My great grandmother did not explain what was happening. She did not need to. I understood it the way a child understands a river — not with words, but with the whole body. Sound was going into that woman. And something else was coming out.

Thirty years later, when I finally sat down to study Yoga Nidra formally, I recognized it immediately. Not because I had studied it before. Because I had lived it before, in that little room, holding those jars.

The body knows before the mind has language. This is not something I learned in a classroom. It is something I inherited.

What Yoga Nidra actually is

Most people think Yoga Nidra is a fancy word for a nap. A guided meditation you do lying down. Something to help you sleep better.

That is a door. It is a very small door into a very large house.

Yoga Nidra — the real practice, not the Instagram version — is a systematic technique for entering the state between waking and sleeping and staying there consciously. The body sleeps. The nervous system drops into its deepest restorative state. But a thin thread of awareness remains awake. And in that state, the subconscious is more porous, more available, more willing to release what the analytical mind has been holding onto for decades.

It is one of the oldest technologies for healing on earth. It predates every modern therapeutic modality. And it works in a language your body already speaks — the language my great grandmother worked in, before there was a word for it.

Why sleep is only the smallest use

Yes, Yoga Nidra will help you sleep. Yes, most women who come to me come first because they cannot rest. Sleep is the door most people walk through because it is the pain they can name.

But if we only used Yoga Nidra to fix sleep, it would be like using a piano only to hammer nails. It works. It is not what the instrument is for.

Yoga Nidra addresses:

The nervous system. Chronic anxiety. The permanent hum of stress in the body of a woman who has been holding everything together for too long. Yoga Nidra does not just quiet this. It rewires the baseline.

Somatic memory. The things your body remembers that your mind has forgotten. The tension in the jaw. The knot in the shoulder that never quite goes away. The tightness in the chest that has no medical explanation. Yoga Nidra invites these to move.

Visualization and sensory reconnection. Most women I work with tell me the same thing at some point: "I cannot visualize. I meditate for hours and I see nothing. I cannot feel, taste, smell anything." This is not a personal failing. It is what happens to a nervous system that has been in survival mode too long. Yoga Nidra brings the senses back online.

The capacity to receive. This is the deepest use. You cannot receive love, opportunity, rest, or your own life if your body has never been trained to actually receive. Yoga Nidra teaches the body what receiving feels like. Everything downstream of that changes.

The levels

There is not just one Yoga Nidra. There are levels — from the beginner practice that teaches the body simply to lie still and relax, all the way to the advanced practices that work with sankalpa (intention), archetype, and the deepest layers of the subconscious.

My work moves a woman through all of them. Not in a single session — over weeks. Six to eight weeks of Yoga Nidra to move from the surface all the way down. This is what your body actually needs. Not one guided meditation. A trained descent through levels of depth most people never touch.

You cannot heal at the level you were wounded. You have to go deeper than the wound. Yoga Nidra takes you there.

The women who came to my great grandmother did not understand her language. They did not need to. Sound went into their bodies and something moved. Sound went into their bodies and life came back.

I am doing the same work. In a different room. In a different century. On a different continent.

The instrument has changed. The lineage has not.

Your body already knows how to heal.
It just needs the right room, the right sound, the right hands —
and someone who has been trained to listen.
